Maré | Narnia on Melrose

Overview | Los Angeles is a city known for perpetuating the general public’s obsession with hidden doors, speakeasies, and secret this-or-that. Theatrics is the name of the LA game and when a concept is born with a completely new and notable approach, sans all cheese-factors such as passwords and lack of signage, you get something along the lines of Maré on Melrose.

Maré, open as of May, is a distinctive restaurant concept I have yet to see and experience in our fair yet concentrated city; a city where it would seem complete originality is harder and harder to come by. Located beyond the kitchen inside Greenspan’s Grilled Cheese, up a few stairs, and finally on a patio above the building, Maré sits pretty under strands of circular lights and the warm California sky. I’d heard that Maré was quite literally a hidden gem, and even after taking mental note of the websites directions it still felt a bit strange (yet a bit exhilarating) walking through the kitchen right by chef Eric Greenspan himself and finally stepping into another world just beyond the cooler-like door.

I knew to expect good, but I didnt know to expect great. I am a “I want to have my cake and eat it too” kind of diner; I want my food to taste as beautiful as my surroundings. I want the full enchilada. So what a relief it truly was to find that Maré’s cool concept with their secret patio-only dining was equally as delicious as their fantastic craft cocktails and seasonal items featured on their concise, seafood-centric menu.

The menu may seem small but Maré offers daily seasonal specials that are always changing and always mandatory for consideration. The meal itself is filled with fresh local ingredients that will have you leaving feeling like you ate well and all the while did something nice for your body. You may have eaten a number of different types of veggies and seafood but you did so in all of their most enjoyable forms.

So long as it’s not raining, Maré is your next perfect place to explore one of LA’s latest and greatest creative dining ventures. An experience I’m sure you’d agree on after visiting is quite special, unusual, and whimsical.

Favorite Drink | The five fruit muddled cocktails available are differentiated by spirit, so they have one with tequila, vodka, gin, mezcal, and one with whiskey. Because I am a whiskey lover I went with the “whiskey + fig + oregano” and it was delicious! I also had a glass of one of their house wines (oops) – 5 options all $9 a glass.

Must Order |  You must have one of their “shellfish” options where you choose from mussels, clams, or shrimp and then pair it with one of their 5-6 broths. I had shrimp with pistou and it was heaven. Plus, you’ll want a broth to dip their delicious bread in – make sure you eat that stuff slowly!

Perfect Spot For | date night // spontaneous adventure // patio dining // seeing and experiencing one of the prettiest places to be in LA // large parties // a seasonally fresh meal // a seafood craving // something different

Pro Tip | There are no reservations at Maré (with the exception of groups of 6 or larger) so on busy nights be sure to get there early.

Fun Fact | Maré is open at 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays – patio day drinking? Yes please!
