If you live or work westside there’s a decent chance you’ve been to or at least heard of The Wellesbourne – especially if you’re in your 20’s-30’s and dabbling in the dating scene (seems like a lot of first dates go down here). Spaciously speaking, The Wellesbourne is a quite “different” by Los Angeles standards; it feels less like that typical rustic or modern space you find here and more along the lines of a sophisticated English Pub with an East Coast vibe – especially with its dark wood, fire places, vintage decor, and several leather bound books. Just kidding there’s no leather bound books or smells of rich mahogany, but it sounded nice, and if you’ve seen Anchorman perhaps you agree.
The Wellesbourne has been a local favorite for going on six years now, but in the spirit of trying to keep things “fresh” in a town that craves anything and everything new, they recently hired on a proper chef, Executive Chef Parker Shaw, to create a food menu to pair alongside their wonderfully classic cocktails. The space is easy on the eyes, that’s for sure, and with a spacious yet cozy environment plus the amount of seating they offer you can see why it was feasible to add food into the mix.
I have to say that now that I’ve been and tried the new food menu, the new shift actually makes complete and total sense – I feel like such a jackass now about having gone in to it a little hesitant. The menu was so much more relaxed and approachable than I’d expected; I’d really had it in my mind that, sheesh, if they were hiring a chef they must be taking the whole operation in some crazy new direction, when in actuality the food is simply complimentary and just meant to add a little bonus somethin’ somethin’ to the overall experience. The plates are small, sharable, fun, affordable, and really very good. The Wellesbourne isn’t a bar trying to be a restaurant, it’s just a great bar who happens to now serve fantastic food – we should all feel so lucky to have it all in one place now!
Favorite Beverage | The Wellesborne is very well versed in the more classic style beverages, so I stuck to the basics and ordered a FANTASTIC Old Fashioned. Think to yourself, “what would my grandpa order?” and order that.
Must Order | As mentioned, all of the dishes are on the small side and meant to pair and share! I absolutely LOVED the mini Italian bolognese burgers, the raspberry cider glazed pork ribs, the swordfish spears (a take on fish n chips), and of course the french fries that you can get seasoned with three different options! (Parmesan, vinegar, or sour cream and onion. I believe.)
Perfect Spot For | a date // after work beverages + bites // late night // classic cocktails // cozy ambiance // tapas style dishes // happy hour // a place to meet up with friends
Pro Tip | The Wellesbourne Happy Hour is what is UP! First of all, it’s everyday from 5 – 7 pm, second off all you’re lookin’ at $8 shared plates, $8 liquor cabinet cocktails, $10 dealer’s choice, and $5 beers on tap. – so. good.
