Love & Loathing LA: The Culver Hotel

Just when you thought you had to brave the streets of Hollywood Blvd to catch a glimpse of what was old Tinsel Town, the Culver Hotel in, you guessed it, Culver City sits just 15 minutes away in the “center” of the city, prepared to share with you one of the most authentic Old Hollywood experiences LA has left to offer.

Built in 1924, the Culver Hotel was constructed in order to be situated within close proximity of some of Hollywoods major studios (to which it still is today), and in result has been host to some of the film industry’s most elite and legendary of stars – stars from classics like Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz being the most infamous and buzzed about. Bragging rights: totally granted.

The Culver Hotel boasts tasteful, authentic, grand architecture and design elements, but despite its “do not touch – this is an antique” appearance, let me assure you, you can relax. Ninety may seem old to those of us who get grossed out by anything built in LA before 1980, and even though the hotel is in impeccable shape don’t stress, it ain’t no museum. At the Culver Hotel guests are welcome to experience a truly glamorous, set-like backdrop all the while enjoying the ways of life in 2014 via things like brunch, and happy hour; two things they probably didn’t have in 1924. Unfortunate.

The Culver Hotel being privy to our present needs peppered with Hollywood glam curiosities offers some seriously unbeatable ways to enjoy an afternoon or evening with the host. Even by foodie/happy hour hunter standards, the Culver Hotel consistently hits the mark. Happy Hour is offered every day, yes that’s every day, from 4 – 7 pm where you and a friend or five can come in and enjoy a house specialty craft cocktail (or beer and wine of course) and a few bites off of the Happy Hour menu.

The Culver Hotel has also not lost sight on the importance of brunch to Angelenos and even to its visitors so brunch is offered every Sunday from 9 am – 2 pm where you have the option of dining inside in their “Grand Lobby”, in their “Crystal Dining Room” (oo?), or outside on their “French Patio” – it’s a good one. Come between 11 am – 2 pm and you will eating to the tunes of a live jazz band. As a matter a fact, come back any time, any day, after 7:30 pm and enjoy even more live jazz. So much jazz you won’t even know what to do with yourself.

Culver City may be my ‘hood so maybe I’m biased, but The Culver Hotel always has been and always will be one of my favorite places to visit in the entire city. The hotel truly is unlike any other place in the City of Angels; they’ve remained in touch with reality and the changing of times but the hotel hasn’t lost even an ounce of its charm or authenticity. Somewhat selfishly, any time I have visitors in town this is one of the first places I take them to, and never once have I gone wrong with making that decision. You don’t always have to pay top dollar to enjoy an afternoon/evening of class and fun in Los Angeles, and the Culver Hotel is valid proof.
