OUTFIT VIDEO: 5 WAYS TO WEAR 90’S CUT OFF SHORTS

How to Wear 90s Cut Off Shorts

Do you ever buy something knowing full well it’s going to pose a challenge? Every now and then I find myself so intrigued by a style or a trend that I initially cant decide if I love it or hate it – niether of which seems to stop me from wanting to try anyway, case in point: the cut off / long shorts denim trend. I see other girls in these shorts and think to myself, “kinda hillbilly, kinda chic, kinda really into it.” It’s clearly a style though that requires a little thought and effort – you have to do this one juuuuussssttt right to pull off. And I’ll be honest, even 5 outfits later I’m not sure I completely pulled off.

But whether you buy a pre cut pair or decide to cut a pair yourself (totally easy to do – get a cheap 100% cotton pair from Goodwill or a flea market and just cut!) this is a pretty easy trend to at least attempt. Especially while it’s still a million degrees here in LA (summer really is just starting).

In trying to wear several different tops/shoes/accessories with these 90s cut off shorts, we’ve come to the conclusion on a few key things to note:
  • these shorts are best styled with minimal, strappy heels or pumps without ankle straps to elongate your legs. Because of where they hit at your thigh, it’s in your best interest to stay away from shoes like boots that can “cut your leg off” and make them look shorter. You might be able to get away with a simple low profile sneaker but, clearly, I was on a mission with the strappy sandal/heel look.
  • focus on pairing them with feminine pieces to balance out the casual/boyish nature of the shorts. Whether thats a pop of color, great accessories, a tank top, crop top, or a body suit – keep it a little feminine!
  • be aware of your level of “casual”. I feel like these shorts can go from “casual brunch” to “fixing a pickup” real quick.
  • play into the “grunge” factor a little with grapic t’s or plaid!
