Destroyer. Super metal name, especially for a restaurant right? Well it’s befitting in one aspect because it seriously is the most serious “casual” breakfast/coffee/lunch spot I’ve probably ever been to. Walk in though to find no black metal or grime, but tunes by Explosions in the Sky and soft minimalist decor instead. The whole vibe definitely draws you in because if you don’t know exactly what you’re in for, it might not be at all what you expect.

The mastermind behind the Culver City “Haden Tract” concept is former Red Medicine chef, Jordan Kahn. If you’re up on your foodie news, people are very very excited to have him back and doing something so incredibly different and borderline crazy. Destroyer is being credited (by JONATHAN GOLD mind you) for “disrupting the idea of fine dining like nowhere else on Earth.” Yeah. Whoa. And after finally having now gone myself, that quote makes complete and total sense.

The goal behind Destroyer was to create a sense of community in the area and fill the void of a local cafe (which this part of Culver was definitely lacking). What it has inevitably has become is a place you kind of hate that you’re obsessed with. It seems a little shishi, seems like a bit of a weird concept, it’s hard to find, it’s not open on weekends, parking is a nightmare… you see? It has some odds stacked against it. But at the same time, you’ve seen the photos, you’ve heard the rave reviews, you do a double-take over the prices, and then finally taste what is being created and all complaints and judgement simply fall away. Destroyer is fucking fantastic. Period.

I went in the other day for breakfast, couldn’t decide what to order so I ordered one of everything – at breakfast there’s about 5 options. The total for everything including a latte came out to around $40. FOURTY DOLLARS TOTAL for all of that beautiful delicious art work. I cannot express enough how much respect I have for this whole Destroyer operation, if you get the chance to skip out on work or you have some time in the morning, go check it out for yourself. It will definitely be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, that I can tell you.

Favorite Beverage | WELL. Their coffee is pretty phenomenal, and if I’m not mistaken they make their own almond milk. I’m not 100% they use it in their almond milk lattes but whatever they use is quite lovely.

Must Order | As mentioned, I had one of everything for breakfast and I was not disappointed by any single dish. Not even a little bit. If I had to pick top favorites though it would be the avocado confit with country bread, and the raw oatmeal with almond milk, vanilla, and red currant. But again, ALL of it was truly amazing – can’t wait to try more off of the lunch menu soon.
