Love and Loathing LA The Cannibal

Beyond the fact that “The Cannibal” is quite possibly most epic and metal name for a restaurant maybe ever, I love that this established East Coast butcher/restaurant concept decided to make their LA debut at Platform – my new local hang. After months of watching the space come to life and participating in a bone luge shot with the team at the grand opening party, it’s safe to say that clearly everything about The Cannibal was already working for me, and I hadn’t even dined in yet! But, with all that said, the notion of over 400 different types of beers and the space being a “butchers restaurant” with every kind of *responsibly raised* cut of meat imaginable is the true reason The Cannibal is worth the visit.

Two weekends ago I finally made it a point to have the full Cannibal experience: beer, meat, veggies, patio, everything. Even at 5 pm the patio was already packed, so we ordered our drink at the bar and hung out until our table outside was ready. Looking over the menu I was surprised to find so many wonderful fresh vegetable dish options; I was fully prepared to only be eating meat but it’s worth noting how much effort they put into wonderful vegetable dishes as well! In their words, “creative and seasonal vegetable preparations are at the core of what we do, we value a properly prepared head of cauliflower as much as we do a delicious roasted pig’s head or a vintage Lambic from a cult Belgian producer…” But really. What you’re there for is the meat, and their charcuterie is one aspect not to pass up on. If you’re feeling really hungry they offer the meat essentials like sausages, a burger, grilled chicken, pork chop, ribeye, and even just your average casual pigs head! Meat lover or not, The Cannibal is such a great spot to stop by and hang for a casual evening out, or even just to pick up some gorgeous cuts of meat for you to cook at home or bring to your next Summer BBQ.

Favorite Beverage | As mentioned… there are over 400 different types of bottled beer available, as well as 12 on draft. Besides the beer though The Cannibal has an amazing wine and cocktail list. The ‘Honey Basil Sling (13 aviation gin, pressed italian sweet basil, lemon, wildflower honey) in particular though is the perfect refreshing cocktail for a Summer night.

Must Order | Without a doubt the most crucial item to start with is the Everything Pretzel with scallion cream cheese – I dream about this thing. The other must orders are depending on your level of hunger; if you’re feeling like snacking get some cheese and charcuterie, and trust me it’d be enough for 2-4. If you’re feeling in the mood for a proper meal make sure you ask what the specials are because from what I gathered they’re always a highlight. Regardless of which main you go with, order at least one of their spectacular vegetable dishes – they’ll be the most exciting and beautiful vegetables you’ve ever eaten.

Perfect Spot For | casual drink and snacks // patio seating // meat lovers // vegetable appreciators // beer connoisseurs // large parties (make a reservation) // happy hour

Pro Tip | HAPPY HOUR!!! Happy Hour at The Cannibal is from 5:30 – 6:30 Tuesday – Sunday and features $20 bottles of Rosé, $3 daily beers, $5 old fashioned cocktails, and FREE charcuterie spreads!!!! I’m not sayin’ I’m just sayin’.
