Overview | El Segundo seems to up its cool factor every time I visit. With recent additions like The Point and Sausal to the community, this South Bay city has put themselves on the map. The foodie map that is. Sausal is the most recent venture to open in the area and to say it has been well received by locals and beyond would be an understatement. From decor to dinner Sausal evokes a rustic yet refined vibe that pays tribute in many ways to the history of the land they call home. Sausal has dubbed their style as “Nuevo Rancho”, meaning the cuisine “pulls history forward by blending traditional Hispanic ingredients with contemporary farmers’ market fare”. So in Caroline words it’s Mexican food with more vegetables and quality ingredients – which I am ALL about. You’ll see classics (and necessities) such as guacamole, ceviche, tacos, etc., but you’ll find creative dishes and takes on classics such as their salads and a few of their veg-ified sides as well.

Only just a few weeks after opening the place was already packed by 6 pm with the grand and spacious bar seeming to be a popular spot for parties of two to hangout over conversation and cocktails. The space as a whole is quite large with both indoor and outdoor seating, but whether you choose to cozy up by the fire inside, enjoy the fresh air al fresco or relax at the bar, no matter where you sit or what you order Sausal will not disappoint.

Favorite Drink | “Fresh Strawberry Margarita”: El Jimador Reposado, Triple, Muddled Driscol Strawberries, Fresh Citrus, Simple, Salt. Not sweet at all, totally flavorful, and a perfect pairing for the meal!

Must Order | The Oxtail Empanadas, the “Duck, Butternut Squash & Oaxaca Cheese” Tamale, and save room for dessert because the Spanish Sticky Date Cake w Spiced Pecans & Vanilla Ice Cream is to DIE for – pastry chef Natasha MacAller (Napa Valley Grille) is a genius.

Perfect Spot For | cocktails + chips + guac // something new and different // date night // weekend brunch // business meal // // large parties // a Mexican food craving

Pro Tip | Don’t panic because there’s no valet – there’s free parking EVERYWHERE in El Segundo!

Fun Fact | Chef Anne Conness is a beloved part of the South Bay community as she has been a part of two other local favorite hangouts, Tin Roof Bistro and Simmzy’s.

Bonus Fact | Sausal is named after Rancho Sausal Redondo [Round Willow Ranch], the vast farmstead that once encompassed El Segundo and most of the South Bay.
