Fact: great fashion does not always have to come with expensive price tags. Case in point: the Who What Wear collection for Target – where more and more pieces showing up in my closet are coming from! I say this EVERY time they come out with a new collection, but this month’s collection is absolutely stunning. It perfectly embodies the Summer California girl who’s kicking ass at the office and having a great time on the weekends. I am definitely the “weekend” California girl today, as I am actually up in Paso Robles hanging out at one of my all time favorite wineries: JUSTIN! I just knew this dress would be perfect for the weather, it would be beautiful amongst all of the beautiful vines, and it would be just an easy breezy all-in-one outfit to throw on for a tasting and for dinner.
Wow. And I’m embarrassed to report that it’d taken me this long to actually DINE at the legendary Michael’s in Santa Monica! But alas, in celebration of a little spacial revamp and a brand new chef, I finally made it in. Michael’s is easily one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Los Angeles, and what I find to be incredibly admirable is that they have continued to evolve with the changing of time while still maintaining a peak level of authenticity and quality. Beloved and respected chefs like Nancy Silverton, Jonathan Waxman, Brooke Williamson, and Sang Yoon (just to name a few) have all manned the Michael’s kitchen at some point, and the level of prestige that this Santa Monica mainstay upholds is something truly incredible.
It’s no secret at this point that LA girls love vintage, they love Levi’s, and they love denim. The trick though always seems to be, “where do we get said vintage/Levi’s/denim!” Los Angeles may be a sprawling city full of boutiques and fashion opportunities, but when it comes to discovering the best finds, you’ve got to know where to go to get them and then what to do to modernize them a bit.
Do you have those pieces in your closet you want to wear regardless of what the weather looks like outside? I have tons of those. In fact I’m convinced that just about everything in my closet can be worn anytime – at least in Los Angeles. Denim and pleather/leather/vinyl are those materials that can totally complete any look, and as far as I’m concerned you can and should wear them whenever you like. Fortunately though it’s been relatively temperate around LA these past few weeks. It’s not too hot that I can’t wear my favorite vinyl skirt, but also not to cold that I have to coverup my favorite button down denim shirt.
One of my absolute favorite ways to “weekend” in LA is to head to Downtown Santa Monica and grab brunch with friends or family – especially during these especially sunny months. There’s always something fun going on around Downtown and always somewhere delicious to eat. I love being able to make an afternoon out of eating, shopping, and strolling, and since I’ve been doing a lot of weekend brunching in Downtown Santa Monica lately, I’ve rounded up the 4 BEST brunch dishes I’ve had in the area. You can make it a brunch walking tour if you please or you can try each item a day at a time, but these are four game-changer breakfast dishes that are not to be missed! *Mimosas optional.*
Current favorite color: sunshine. I’m seeing girls everywhere rocking yellow this-that-and-the-others and I must say, I’m right there with them! I bought this Reformation dress to wear to a wedding, thinking I’d be the only one to wear such a bright color, but as turns out about 5 other girls attending had the same idea. SO many brands right now are making such cute yellow dresses it’s no surprise at all so many of us are attracted to the trend. Yellow is just one of those colors that flatters everyone, and with the warm weather starting to come through, yellow is definitely the color of the season.
I am ALWAYS looking for an excuse to dine near the beach, and I am ALWAYS looking for an excuse to eat meals that have something to do with Brendan Collins. So when Tower12 in Hermosa landed on my radar I was genuinely ecstatic because in this case I’d get to have both. Chef Brendan Collins of Birch is one of my absolute favorite chefs in LA, and when I’d heard he had consulted on another menu for a new restaurant, I’d instantly made up my mind to go there ASAP. Chef Collins has his LA mainstay, Birch, as some of you may be familiar with, but he’s consulted on a menu for another one of my favorite (insanely underrated) LA local hideaways called Butchers Dog. Seriously, whatever he touches turns to gold, and Tower12 is no exception!
Life is but a dream in the City of Angels. When us Angelenos reflect on how fortunate we are to live in such an incredible and diverse place, one of the first things we all agree on is that it doesn’t get any better than having immediate access to the best of what California has to offer: beach/mountains/desert and FORESTS. I feel like I’ve experienced quite a bit within the LA county borders, more than your average Angeleno one might say, but before last week I’d never been to the Angeles National Forest, nor even knew it existed.
I was actually recently inspired to find my nearest forest thanks in part to Boxed Water and learning more about their inspiring ReTree Project. Through this initiative the brand plants two trees for every social post on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter that features their product with hashtag #ReTree. In partnership with the National Forest Foundation, the goal of their ReTree Project is to plant ONE MILLION trees within a five-year period. This year alone they’re planting trees in the Sierra National Forest, Stanislaus National Forest, and Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest – they’re already up to over 500k trees!
“Three things I can’t stop putting on repeat lately: high wasted everything, vintage t-shirts, and reflective Ray-Ban sunnies” – said every girl in LA right now. Gotta say though, I’m on the band wagon and I’m not mad about it! I have been tirelessly wearing out my Levi’s and AG jeans lately, and my favorite thing to pair them with is t-shirts like this vintage Beatles shirt I got for $20 at Melrose Trading Co. I just picked up these Who What Wear pumps for $32.99 at Target, because I have an addiction to trying to buy their entire collections, but also because I was in desperate need of a classic pump. If it’s chilly out I love to throw a blazer on over this type of look, and this particular blazer is one of my absolute FAVORITE finds from this season. I got it at H&M and it was $59.99 – it’s the perfect light weight jacket for Spring/Summer, plus it goes with literally everything.
Do you ever find things while shopping that you kind of hate on the hanger, but you know will be gold when you try it on? This jacket was totally one of those things for me! There was something so “not me” about it, yet something kind of “I still need to try it on” at the same time. So I did, and I loved it – as it so happens sometimes. I snagged this guy at a very cool preview I got to attend for Who What Wear’s latest Spring collection for Target, but sadly to my surprise I can’t seem to find it anywhere to tell you where to buy it! I’m feeling very honored that I may now be the proud owner of a very rare WWW piece, but I hate that I can’t share with all my friends out there where to get this great Springtime jacket. Nonetheless, it’s still worth noting that the new WWW collection at Target is AMAZING. So far I’ve bought two tops, two dresses, two pairs of shoes, and I’ve spend less than $250 total.
