Destroyer. Super metal name, especially for a restaurant right? Well it’s befitting in one aspect because it seriously is the most serious “casual” breakfast/coffee/lunch spot I’ve probably ever been to. Walk in though to find no black metal or grime, but tunes by Explosions in the Sky and soft minimalist decor instead. The whole vibe definitely draws you in because if you don’t know exactly what you’re in for, it might not be at all what you expect.
Oh hello topic I hardly ever speak on yet get asked about all the time! If there’s one question I get more often than others, it’s “how do you eat all that food and stay in shape?” Let me tell you, I may have decent genes (thanks mom and dad!), but at the end of the day it takes work. Shock of the century.
My true happiness depends on my ability to find balance. For example: I love wine, pizza, and all things sugary or buttery, therefore I must find ways to (as best I can) enjoy working it all off as well. Sure, if I had less of said wine and pizza I probably wouldn’t have to workout as hard, or I’d be in a lot better shape, but at the end of the day I can say with complete conviction that I am very happy with the balance I have come to find and the small choices I make on a day to day basis. Can you guys believe the actual WEATHER we’re having right now? My wifi actually went out today! Poor sensitive Los Angeles wires and connections; so sweet and fragile. I feel like every time I put on a real coat in LA, I always get questionable looks or the awkward “you look really warm…” comments, but the past few weeks I’ve clearly the most comfortable and intelligent person out there in the 40 – 50 degree cold with my heavy duty coat on! “Who’s the moron now!”
I’ve had this coat in particular in my closet for an entire year now and haven’t been able to wear it (without feeling like said moron) in over a year. I am so happy Los Angeles is finally having a moment of chill so I can bust out all of my favorite “East Coast coats”. I am all about furry/fuzzy coats right now, or “fashion blankets” as I prefer to call them, because they really are the most wonderful way to dress up an outfit all the while remain totally comfy cozy.
If there is one Fall/Winter season staple I haven’t seen fall out of fashion within the past 5+ years, it’s the beloved “camel coat”. And I swear I’ve been searching for the perfect damn camel coat for about 5 years now. It has to be the right color, the right length, has to have the right lapel, the right shape, the right amount of buttons – whew! I have never felt more like Goldie Locks over something so ridiculous in my whole life! So alas, instead of finding the absolute perfect camel colored coat – which to my very disappointing discovery usually costs around $1k+ – I’ve started collecting more affordable “almost perfect camel colored coats” instead.
I have had so many girlfriends run into the same issue with finding the right camel coat, so I did some digging and found 6 really great camel colored coats that are perfect for this season, and all happen to be under $200. Well, except for one because it’s just too good to leave out! Between light weight / heavy weight / light colored / darker colored / shorter / longer options, I am sure we can find you your “almost perfect camel coat” too!
I’ve never met a treat I didn’t like, but if you’re telling me there’s a delicious treat out there that happens to not only be tasty but also incredibly adorable… the ante has significantly been upped. Take these ice cream desserts from SomiSomi. If you live in LA, follow foodies, and try to stay on top of the pulse of current trends, there’s a chance you’ve already seen these little cuties somewhere on the internets or Instagrams. My best gal pal Nastassia of @letmeeatcake is ALWAYS on the look out for the latest and greatest sweet trends and this one I just needed to see and experience for myself as well.
Just because the holidays have come and gone doesn’t mean we have to put the sequins, beads, and sparkles away? Au contraire! Everyday is a good day for sparkles – in moderation of course. I got this Free People dress for New Years festivities, but to my surprise it has been on frequent rotation lately for meetings/dinners/etc.
I’m always looking for dresses/skirts to wear with my over the knee boots, and this dress is the perfect compliment for these boots. If you’ve got a pair of over the knee boots you understand the struggle; not everything goes with them! I typically have to start with the boots and work around the rest of the outfit, and usually I settle on a mini dress like this one.
There’s a new kid on one of my favorite DTLA blocks, and with it being at the center of the Arts District, it’s safe to assume that it’s hip, easy on the eyes, and yeah – tasty. The Smile’s di Alba opened up just last week and is already attracting passersby and Chef Nina Clemente (The Standard) fans like myself. The concept is a partnership between Nina and the brains behind NYC’s successful multi-concept dining collective called The Smile. Di Alba is the first West Coast concept to open and it’s described as “a modern, market-driven take on an Italian focacceria”. Now I don’t know about you, but all I needed to hear was “focacceria” and my cheese n’ bread lovin’ brain was piqued. I can’t really think of any focacceria’s in LA, and if you’ve been to Italy you know what a crucial role these types of eateries play in just about every Italian city. Pizzerias/Focaccerias are about as plentiful in Italy as Donuterias are in America. (Yes I 100% just made up “donuteria” but it kind of has a ring to it, doesn’t it?)
“I hate High Tea.” – said no girl ever. If you hate miniature sandwiches, cute cups, warm beverages, and friendship, well then this is a very sad story for you. The good news is though that there’s a good chance you probably happen enjoy tea, sandwiches, and tiny desserts – whether you’re a girl or a boy. So then. Let’s talk about this Afternoon Tea situation at The Peninsula Hotel Beverly Hills for a minute, shall we?
My blog here may be called “Love & Loathing Los Angeles”, but the “love” has always far outweighed the “loathing”. I suppose I won’t ever be completely on board with horrendous traffic, any and all parking situations, or the general cost of living, but there’s not much else to convince me that this isn’t exactly where I want to be. Things like palm trees, amazing people, tacos, the ever-present sun, and the fact that there is ALWAYS something to do are frequent reminders of that.
Last week I went and saw the (INCREDIBLE) LA-themed movie La La Land starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling *swoon*, and I am still in a state of warm and fuzzy feels. I found myself relating to the storyline and characters on such a deep level, to the point that it has all created quite a bit of wonderful and meaningful thought and conversation.
