5 “EDGY” TRENDS LA GIRLS INVEST IN

5 “EDGY” TRENDS LA GIRLS INVEST IN

I have always described my personal style as being “classic and structured with a little rock n roll edge”. Since discovering my personal style in high school I have been rocking band t-shirts, tennis shoes, Levis, menswear, bleach blond hair, and red lipstick ever since. In other words, the closer I look to Gwen Stefani, the happier I am. My style at 30 might be a bit more elevated than it was back then, but I have always been drawn to those more edgy looks and items. LA girls have so much fun with their style, and even if you aren’t “edgy” persé, there are some pieces worth investing in right now that are guaranteed to up your style game. Ladies, let’s do this:

DR MARTEN’S

Given. Is there a girl in LA without a pair of Doc’s right now? Back in myyyy day DOC’s were reserved mainly for Steam Punks and Goths, but I have always loved the look and have wanted a pair of my own. (I was more of a hardcore kid K? We rocked Samoas. That’s a whole other blog post. “A Side of Caroline You Never Knew About.”) Anyhow, fast forward to 2019 and just about every girl out there is rocking the platform Doc’s – I found this pair of patent leather Doc’s that have a bit of a platform and thick silk laces and I am in heaven. Wish they came in white because I’d gladly buy those too. But no matter the style you choose, of which you will learn there are several, Doc’s are an instant style – and general badass attitude – upgrade.

RAY-BANS

Another given. There is no other sunglasses brand out there that says “ROCK N ROLL” quite like classic Ray-Ban. The edgier girls skip the aviator styles and head right for the wire round frames. I love the classic gold frames with the dark green lenses, but right now I am actually especially loving these all black plastic round frames. They’re a bit bigger than some of the styles (some are too small for my face), and I love that because they’re all black they go with just about everything. So moody. So good.

GRAPHIC T’S

I have been wearing band T’s since as long as I can remember. I grew up in the music scene, worked in music for the better portion of my late teens and twenties, and have subsequently allowed graphic t’s to become a major part of my identity. If you’re not in love with the idea of going on a vintage t-shirt hunt, brands like Anine Bing, Daydreamer and Madeworn are making really fun vintage-esque graphic band t-shirts that look like you’ve owned them for forever.

SEQUIN skirt

SEQUINS

Now, I know, sequins can really go either way here: they can either be chic, fun, and super cool… or they can be cheesy, tacky, and just flat out lame. Should you find the right sequin choice – be it a blazer, a top, or a skirt in this particular case – it can totally make your entire outfit. I love throwing in an unexpected uber feminine item to offset some of my more edgy looks, it can really bring the whole thing together and balance a look out perfectly. For now, heading into Spring, invest in the sequin skirt and rock it with a t-shirt and sneakers (or Doc’s) – instant cool girl.

VELVET blazer

VELVET

Velvet has been the rock n roll world’s fabric of choice for, forever, so it only seems natural that it would still hold up in the edgier fashion world today. I have a pair of velvet pants that I love to dress up with a graphic t. I also have a velvet blazer – pictured – that is the perfect soft yet cool compliment to any edgy look. If you happen upon a velvet blazer, buy it. You’ll have it for forever.
