Teeecchhnically Summer is almost over, but in Los Angeles, regardless of the date or potential 3 degrees change in weather, the fun never seems to end. There are just around three weeks left of the Summer solstice and in the spirit of making those sun soaked, sweet and sandy memories here are 9 of my favorite summertime activities to get in on STAT! Don’t put those picnics, bathing suits, and sunscreen bottles, and that sense of adventure away just quite yet, we’re ridding this Summer thing out all the way to the end.
Whether it’s at the Hollywood Forever with Cinespia, at a hotel, with Eat See Hear, Rooftop Cinema Club, and so on and so forth, you gotta see a movie outside this Summer. It’s mandatory. For an EPIC full list of every screening ever, head to Thrillist to find what might fit your fancy!
You have until September 22 to enjoy extended hours (open until 10pm nightly) and tons of events/specials at the Grand Central Market Downtown! Between Trivia Tuesdays, Drag Queen Bingo, Sunday Soirees, live music, food/drink specials, and so much more, now is the time to take advantage of this ‘summertime only’ fun at the market.
The Santa Monica Pier has been hosting these FREE concerts for years, and this season you’ve still got two more chances to catch one of the shows! Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be playing on the night of September 1st and Ohio Players will be playing the closing show on September 8th. Whether you like the music or not the experience alone is such a blast; you can read about my Twilight Concert experience HERE.
If you haven’t gotten your token mirrored room selfie yet, QUICK because time is running out! The famed and beloved Infinity Mirrored Room installation by Kusama at The Broad will be making its departure in October this year, and if there’s an installation to say you’ve seen/experienced, this would be the one.
Jazz Nights on Fridays at LACMA is one of those things I always think “I still have time to do that”, but sadly we’re nearing the end of series and time is just going to keep on flying right by. We’ve got until Friday October 21st to grab some friends, pull up some lounge chairs (provided but come early to snag), order some wine, sit back, relax and listen to some live jazz music. (Before or after be sure to check out Guillermo Del Torro’s brand new “At Home with Monsters” Exhibit! It’s fantastic.)
Yep. #Roséallday is more than just a saying/hashtag and The Churchill is making the whole concept a reality this Summer by offering, you guessed it, rosé all day everyday for just $14! It doesn’t have to be a weekend brunch situation to get your fix, but it does have to happen sometime before October when the summer water runs dry.
Ah the Hollywood Bowl. An Angeleno rite of passage as I like to say, and it’s something to be enjoyed every year at least once if not more. The last concert of the Summer season will be September 25 and between now and then you’ve still got plenty of events to choose from! Grab some tickets, pack a picnic (if you can, be sure to check), bring a blanket and a date and take in the magic.
Los Angeles is host to food festivals all kinds all year around, but the Summer festivals are always the most fun. Sadly LA Food + Wine is already over but you’ve still got a chance to redeem yourself by grabbing tickets to this weekend’s (September 2-4) THE TASTE hosted by The LA Times (of of my favorite festivals all year as you can read more about HERE!) and/or grabbing tix to attend the EastSide Food Festival on October 2nd at Mack Sennet Studios.
So… this is actually a year round activity, but one you’ll probably enjoy doing more during the Summer! Especially right now while the lotuses are in full bloom on the lake. Pack a picnic basket (or have someone like Stir Market or Joan’s on Third pack it for you), enjoy the scenery, and maybe get wild and hop on a paddle boat!
10. DODGER GAME
The regular season ends at the end of September, and while we hope and pray to god that the boys and blue take us to the post season, you’ve got just one more month to attend a guaranteed game! Some fun games to attend (outside of Giants series or Friday night fireworks) would be September 5th for the hat giveaway (and it’s a good one this year!), or September 20th for Vin Scully Bobblehead night! Plus: Dodger Dogs and dirty Helmet Nachos are calling you.
