Love and Loathing LA Summer Beauty

With each new season comes new beauty products. Similar to rotating seasonal flavors at your local ice cream shop, beauty products are a reflection of the time of year as well and must be tested, tried, tasted, and applied accordingly. Typically speaking, what’s delicious during the Winter won’t be as tasty during the Summer, so keeping up with what’s fresh and in season is imperative. (That goes both for ice cream and beauty products.) With the sunniest of seasons upon us I’ve been a very busy girl personally investigating all types of products from the absolute necessities to the just-for-fun ones. (I know, miserable.) I’ve been on the hunt for the best sunscreen to protect my face under my makeup (found it!), and per usual, I’ve been obsessing over all of the Spring/Summer makeup trends such as application of copper/coral tones. Somewhere in between I’ve discovered all kinds of products that we should all get our hands *and faces* on this Summer. So with no further adieu, grab a refreshing beverage and allow me to introduce you to your official Love & Loathing LA guide to the best beauty products for summer!

// SUNBLOCK //

1. PARFAIRE // Clear Defense SPF 45 // $45

Parfaire is my go-to medical spa located here in Los Angeles; I’ve seen Dr. Winnie and the rest of the team for everything from laser hair removal to facials, and out of my love for the  treatments derived my love for Parfaire products! I have been using their Clear Defense sunscreen on my face every day for about 2-3 months now and this product is probably the best thing I’ve discovered in the beauty department this year. It’s the perfect weight, it’s not oily AT ALL, it doesn’t make me break out (*CRUCIAL*), and it’s exactly what I needed for an everyday/under my makeup SPF.

WORTH NOTING : Parfaire is offering an awesome referral program right now for a discount on services! If you book an appointment (list of treatments: HERE) for any service (except for SilkPeel) and mention my name, Caroline Juen of Love & Loathing LA, you will get $50 off of your treatment. You’re welcome. And while you’re there pick up some of this magical sunscreen!!!

// CORAL TONED LIPSTICKS //

2BITE BEAUTY // Amuse Bouche Lipstick Collection (“Gingersnap”) // $26

My accessory of choice has been and always will be lipstick, and if there’s a brand out there that will have my affection until the end of time it’s Bite. Bite recently came out with a whole new collection of high-impact lipsticks called the Amuse Bouche and they’ve got TONS of shades perfect for Summer. I have been really drawn to natural/coral/pink tones this season and Gingersnap is my current most prized shade.

// LOUD, PROUD, + CRULTY FREE NAIL POLISH //

3BELLA LAQUER // Nail Polish // $13

I will ALWAYS have love for my LA based brands doing right by the people by making quality driven products, and Bella Laquer is right up there with the best of ’em. The brand prides themselves of being “5-free” yet miraculously also long-lasting – the best of both worlds as far as I’m concerned! Right now you’ve got 13 delicious colors to choose from with some titles that would seriously rival OPI’s, and they’re all just $13.

// WHITE EYELINER //

4NARS // Larger Than Life Eyeliner (“Santa Monica Blvd” – appropriately named) // $25

Never in a million years did I think I’d wear, let alone buy white eyeliner, but here we are, 2016, and I’m really feelin’ it! I have to give all the credit to my friends over at Beauty Balm Studio over on Melrose because every time I visit them, they open my eyes (almost literally) to something new and trendy. I was in there a few weeks ago and let my girl do her thing, and the first trick out of her bag was white eyeliner! She put it on the inside of my lower lid and it really does “open up” your eyes – and not in a cheesy borderline caricature way. She also inspired me to use it on top of my eyelid as well in place of regular eyeliner and I must admit, I am in love with this look – especially for these upcoming warmer months where white becomes a shade of choice.

// SUMMER TIME GLOW //

5. BECCA // Afterglow Palette  // $39.50

This is ANOTHER product I was introduced to by my friends at Beauty Balm Studio and now that I have it I can’t imagine a Spring/Summer without it. In one palette you get the perfect bronzer, a bright blush, a light shimmery highlighter, and two coral/golden eyeshadows. I love this palette because you can pretty much pack this in your purse/gym bag/overnight bag and after application of each shade you’ll achieve the perfect effortless, glowy look for Summer.

// SKINCARE SERUM //

6.  VINTNER’S DAUGHTER // Active Botanical Serum // $185

If you regularly keep up with beauty trends then you’ve probably been hearing a lot recently about the benefits of facial oils vs typical creams. Vintner’s Daughter is a part of this revolutionary skincare movement, they just happen to be doing it better than everyone else. Stemming from her background in wine making, owner April Gargiulo set out on a journey to partner with natural skincare veterans and create a “hero” formulation that would address just about any and every skincare need. Today we have Vintner’s Daughter, an active botanical serum made up of the worlds most powerful and rich botanicals and essential oils. It’ll cost you a cool $185 a bottle, but both Vogue and I would agree that it’s “worth the investment.” #…FOREVERYOUNG.

// COPPER EYESHADOW //

7KEVYN AUCOIN // Loose Shimmer Shadow (“Sunstone”) // $29

Copper colored eyeshadow is a great day-to-night look that’s perfect for the warmer weather. I love this particular shade from Kevyn Aucoin because it’s nice and light, it’s got the right amount of shimmer without being “too much”, and it’s more of a natural copper than an orange copper so you can still wear a bold lipstick if you’re feelin’ crazy! Which is always lately, if you’re anything like me. One of my favorite “looks” right now is this copper eyeshadow paired with either a brown eyeliner or white eyeliner and there you have it, a quick and easy summer shimmer.

 // THE PERFECT SKINCARE LINE //

8. GUINOT // Bioxygene Cleansing Foam, Bioxygene Face Cream, Eye Fresh Cream // $30 – $60 (depending on the product)

Guinot is a brand you might not be totally familiar with unless you’ve visited Europe and purchased some of their products, or been to a spa here in the states where they use it for treatments. I was fortunate enough to have a facial while I was staying at The Alisal Guest Ranch where all of the products used were Guinot – I loved the smell and the way everything felt so much I got a few to take home. The brand ambassador I spoke with mentioned that the three products mentioned above were her personal favorites out of the entire collection, and after now having used them all daily for a few months now I can see why. I honest to god cannot believe how much my skin has cleared up since I started using Guinot, zits and dark circles are practically non-existent – it’s a freakin miracle. This collection is a miracle. You won’t be able to get Guinot in stores but you can order it online (amazon being my choice), or you can search on their website for a spa who sells it!

*And for the record, I’ve been using the botanical serum on top of everything, and I’m likin’ what I’m seein’.
